1/26/01 -- JESSE WINCHESTER
"As earthy as Dave Alvin, as soulfully country as Lyle Lovett, as bluesy as Geoff Muldaur and as heartwarming as Don Williams (plus with the pipes of a reined in Roy Orbison)," Winchester came into prominence with his 1970 Robbie Robertson-produced, self-titled album, which some critics still hail as "one of the greatest first records ever." With his laid back grooves, exquisite songwriting and uncanny knack for juxtaposing R & B rhythms against country/folk lyrics, he has been admired as "-a guy who could draw breathtaking pictures with a few well chosen words" by the Toronto Star. He stopped performing in 1990, but kept writing songs that became hits for Reba McEntire, Emmylou Harris, Wynonna Judd, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Buffett, John Denver and Chris Smither. In 1999 the legendary singer/songwriter chose our venue as the first he would perform in after a 9 year hiatus. Tonight we welcome him back. $16adv/$18door
